Coach implicated in alleged rape of diver suspended

Sport minister Khairy Jamaluddin sets up special committee to study the issue of sexual harassment of athletes.

khairy-rapePETALING JAYA: The coach implicated in police investigations into the alleged rape of a diver has been suspended, the ministry of youth and sports announced today.

Its minister, Khairy Jamaluddin, said the ministry would give its full cooperation to the police, besides carrying out its own internal probe involving the National Sports Council, Amateur Swimming Association of Malaysia and Olympic Council of Malaysia.

Khairy said the findings of the internal probe would be handed over to the police.

“I am disappointed and saddened by this incident, and hope a fair investigation will be done. I also ask all parties to respect the privacy of the victim and all other national diving athletes,” he said.

Yesterday, Kuala Lumpur police revealed that a 35-year-old coach of the national swimming squad had been detained in Sri Petaling following a complaint by the mother of an athlete.

It was understood that the suspect is a Chinese national and a former Olympic athlete.

Khairy also said the ministry had formed a special committee to study the issue of sexual harassment of athletes.

He said the committee was a long-term measure and would be headed by Marina Chin, the former Malaysian contingent chief for the 2017 SEA Games.

“The committee will study all aspects of the issue and the necessary short and long-term measures including the guidelines to handle complaints, a whistle blower policy, athletes’ welfare and other related matters. The committee will submit its report and recommendations direct to me,” he added.
