The 12 Belawan fishermen, in three boats, were arrested by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency on Oct 15.
PETALING JAYA: Around 100 Indonesian fishermen staged a rally today in front of the Malaysian consulate general in Medan, North Sumatra, in support of fishermen arrested in Malaysian waters.
Jakarta Post said they demanded that 12 Belawan fishermen, arrested by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency on Oct 15, be set free.
The rally, organised by the Alliance of Malacca Strait Fishermen, was attended by wives and children of the arrested fishermen.
Rally coordinator Usman claimed there was no legal basis for the Malaysian authorities to nab the three Indonesian fishing boats, including the 12 fishermen on board, claiming they had been in Indonesian waters.
The three boats were KM Farel Grouston, KM Jujur Bahagia and KM Selama Jaya.
The news portal identified the 12 as Adil, Amuluddin, Muslim, Ismail, Khairul, Pujiono, Putra, Rudianto Daulay, Syahril, Ucok, Yahda and Zainudin.
Several representatives later held a closed-door meeting with consulate-general representatives to voice their grievances.
The portal quoted Zulfahri Siagian, a rally participant who attended the meeting, as saying the consulate-general had agreed to release the fishermen by November.
Salmiah, an official with the consulate-general, said it would facilitate the release of the fishermen by liaising with the authorities concerned.
