In an ongoing retirement party for the iconic Boeing 747, United Airlines is selling off parts of the double decker aircraft in an auction that will allow aviation buffs to own a piece of aeronautic history.
From now until November 7, MileagePlus members can use their award miles to bid on a selection of hardware from the game-changing double decker which became known as the “Queen of the Skies” during its reign.
In the market for a new seating arrangement for your in-home theater room or basement den?
Items up for grabs in the auction include a row of either triple or double passenger seats from the jumbo jet.
Over the next few weeks, more Boeing 747 hardware items will be released, including a rudder trim indicator, forward-facing American flag cut-out, brake pressure indicator, oxygen pressure indicator, and standby altimeter.
The auction will be a combination of “buy now” and “bid now.”
All proceeds from the auction will go towards Air Camp, an educational experience that teaches young students about aeronautics and aviation.
United will bid a final farewell to its last Boeing 747 in a send-off flight November 7, recreating the inaugural journey made in 1970 from San Francisco to Honolulu.
The retro flight sold out in just two hours.
Other carriers to phase out their Boeing 747s in favor of more fuel-efficient, modernized aircrafts include Eva Air, Singapore Airlines and Qantas.
More details on the auction can be found on MileagePlus site.
