BUKIT MERTAJAM: The remains of seven Indonesians who were killed in an accident involving two factory buses at Km147 northbound of the North-South Expressway near the Juru toll plaza on Wednesday, were flown home tonight.

Vice-consul general of Indonesia in Penang, Osrinikita Zubhana, said the process was handled by the consulate general together with their employer, Sony.

“All the post-mortems and documentation have been completed, and I was told by their employer that the process to bring home the seven victims will commence tonight, and they are expected to arrive at their respective hometowns by tomorrow or the day after (Friday).

“Four remains will be taken to Medan, and one each to Aceh, Central Java and East Java. None of their family members came here (to Penang) as they wished to wait in Indonesia,” she told reporters when met at the Seberang Jaya Hospital’s (HSJ) Forensics Unit here, today.

Eight factory workers were killed, and 44 others injured in the accident at about 5.30am yesterday.

Those who perished were identified as Noriah Kasa, 40, a local, and seven Indonesians, namely Serlia, 21; Resni Tumanggar, 22; Yeni, 20; Sartika Pasaribu, 19; Wami Windasih, 19; Faridah, 18; and Kris Pratiwi, 20.

Noriah was a Plexus factory worker in Bayan Lepas, while the others worked at the Sony factory in Perai. All were on their way to work when the incident occurred.

Osrinikita said the consulate would hold talks with Sony to get compensation for the families of the victims and to manage their insurance claims.

“Currently, 20 Indonesians, including two in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at HSJ and Penang Hospital are still being treated, while nine others have been allowed to go home,” she said.

Seberang Perai Tengah district police chief Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid said urine and blood tests conducted on the drivers of the factory buses involved in the accident came back negative for drugs and alcohol.

“They have been remanded for four days and we are conducting further investigations to complete the case,” he said.
