ANTI-KLEPTOCRACY RALLY, WHERE ARE THE NUMBERS?

Share This:

Competing in politics is like battling in a war in which the strength depended hugely on its number of armies and assets to determine their victory. The similar applies to political parties and their strength will be witnessed through rallies and road-shows. Whereas, the issues raised by each contesting political party, there will always be both sides of the coins and up to the approach to the arguments.

However, issues alone will not be able to win over to an influence of a political party and politicians will have to address these issues factually, sincere and influential. Besides, prominent figures could add to their victory too.

Ever since the opposition bloc received increase support in the last two general elections, almost every other year they held a mega rally the most successful was organized by Bersih. From the first Bersih street demonstration, they have never failed to gather anything less than 100,000 participants.

On last Saturday, Pakatan Harapan has continued their illegal gathering with the theme of ‘Anti-Kleptocracy’ and ‘Save Malaysia’ in Padang Timur, Petaling Jaya. Surprisingly, their targets are not too ambitious enough to put 100,000 presence.

Last, Anwar Ibrahim managed to garner hundreds of thousands of Pakatan Rakyat supporters in their “Black505” gathering to protest against GE13 results whereby Barisan Nasional regained as the ruling party once again. PAS was part of the opposition coalition in Pakatan Rakyat.

One of the key factors that have attracted hundreds of thousands of attendance for every opposition gathering was the participation of PAS supporters. Although DAP was the strength of Chinese support, the population demography that only covers 25% of the total Malaysians, it will be too impossible to be able to collect the hundreds of thousands attendance.

Among other factors that are able to gather hundreds of thousands of participation is the location venue that Bersih rallies are always held in Kuala Lumpur. While their speakers are composed of those who can be regarded as superstars in opposition politics comprising of Anwar Ibrahim, Kit Siang, Mat Sabu, Wan Azizah and some young leaders such as Nurul Izzah, Tony Pua and Rafizi.

When PAS was together in Pakatan Rakyat, their president Hadi Awang is also among the opposition superstars and not to miss out Mat Sabu who will deliver his fiery speeches.

In any assembly so be it small, medium or mega in sizes, they need funding and it is undeniable apart from donation collections from the ground, the initial preparations require large sums to attract participants. In fact, Bersih organisers had once confessed to receiving financing from abroad for their rally activities.

Publicity is another important element that should be conducted and it has to be widely disseminated and continuously by the organisers and supporters in social media or even from the ground. Not only it is meant to confirm the basic information such as the venue, date and time, the assembly objectives are paramount to supporters and participants.

All of those key factors are adequate and fulfilled to hold the anti-Kleptocracy mega assembly to anticipate large crowds even without PAS presence. The recent assembly was led by Mat Sabu who is the President of PAS splinter party PAN. As Dr Mahathir is Pakatan Harapan Chairman, PPBM acted as the main organiser.

The main question is, despite with all the key factors fulfilled and considerable preparations were done, why the media including the pro-opposition news portal Malaysiakini, they reported the turnout was quite disgracing that only about 5 percent than the anticipated crowd. What went wrong actually?
