PETALING JAYA: An AirAsia plane flying from Medan to Penang was forced to return to the airport after a suspected bird strike.

China Press reported the incident happened at 2.50pm today (1.50pm in Medan).

According to the report, the Airbus A320 left Medan at 1.35pm.

Five minutes later, the pilot informed passengers that there was an engine problem caused by a bird strike and that he was returning to the Kualanamu airport in Medan using the second engine.

Passengers were stranded on landing after being asked to claim their baggage.

They were expected to take another flight soon.

Most of the 150 passengers were Indonesians with the rest Malaysians.

On July 4, an AirAsia X flight had to divert to Brisbane after a suspected bird strike.

Flight D7207, bound for Kuala Lumpur, had just taken off from the Gold Coast in Australia at about 10.20pm when passengers heard bangs and saw flames coming from the right engine.
