A couple of Malaysians have come up with a char kuey teow burger, but the only problem is that it does not contain kuey teow.
KUALA LUMPUR: Char kuey teow burger anyone? After all the talk about the nasi lemak burger, someone has actually come up with a char kuey teow burger.
If that sounds a little crazy, how about this: there will be no kuey teow in the char kuey teow burger.
The idea of Razif Hashim, founder of internet food channel Fungry TV, is being cooked up by Ahong Yeang, chef of Petaling Jaya diner, Grub.
The burger is said to combine the main elements of a traditional burger and a typical wok-fried char kuey teow. The burger’s “patty” is an egg wrap containing filling made with such things as bean sprouts, cockles, garlice, and fishcake, but minus the actual kuey teow.
Channel News Asia (CNA) had last month reported that McDonald’s had brought back the nasi lemak burger to Singapore after seeing a huge demand when it first introduced the temporary menu item in June.
That announcement came on the heels of news that Malaysia’s myBurgerLab was extending its nasi lemak ayam rendang burger to the end of the year, and that it was also bringing in a beef version of the burger.
McDonald’s has since also come up with a spicy Korean burger. Not to be left out, Publika cafe Pan and Tamper has produced a nasi kerabu burger, according to a report in CNA yesterday.
The latest addition to this local-flavoured burger craziness is the char kuey teow burger .
The CNA report quoted Razif as saying that instead of kuey teow, the burger would have fishcake, cockles, chilli, beansprouts, salted duck egg yolk and halal bak kwa.
“In my mind, a char kuey teow’s success depends on the ‘wok hei’ burnt taste, which I feel will work better in a burger than the creamy spicy combination the nasi lemak has to offer,” Razif was quoted as saying.
In a video promoting his creation, Razif said the nasi lemak burger craze had made him question if the dish was truly Malaysia’s national dish.
