Sabah DAP vice-chairman Frankie Poon says Selangor and Penang have done well after being ruled by PH.
KOTA KINABALU: Sabah DAP vice-chairman Frankie Poon has brushed off criticisms levelled at Sabah Pakatan Harapan and reiterated that all the goals in the opposition coalition’s manifesto are achievable.
Poon was responding to Malaysia Agreement 1963 activist Michael Peter Goviind who said the manifesto, called “New Deal for Sabah”, was superficially designed.
“I am utterly dismayed by the statement made by Goviind,” Poo told FMT. “In his entire statement, he had nothing to say other than giving destructive comments. How will he know that Sabah PH will not implement what has been promised?
“His justification is so superficial and shallow. It does not have any basis whatsoever and is mere rhetoric.
“Is he so used to the BN government’s style that shows nothing will ever materialise from promises made by them?
“What has BN’s failure to return the 40% of Sabah’s total net revenue collected got to do with PH’s promise of 50% after PH has formed the state and federal governments? Try us out and then you will know.”
Poon, who is also Sandakan DAP deputy chairman, said a term of five years is all that PH needs as both Penang and Selangor have experienced great changes after being given the mandate to manage the states.
“Sabah should also try it. In fact, a strong PH state and federal government will help bring changes for the better, in line with MA63. This will allow PH’s manifesto to materialise,” added Poon.
Poon said Sabah PH has not revealed the whole manifesto and there is no need to pour cold water on the hopes and aspirations generated by it.
“The Sabah manifesto was never superficially designed. In fact, the whole manifesto was well-thought out by our Sabah think tank, not carelessly constructed as claimed by Goviind.
“Every promise made is achievable. He tried to debunk PH’s manifesto using conjectures based on the federal BN’s current and past records.
“We also have tested national leaders like Dr Mahathir Mohamed, Malaysia’s father of modernisation.
“We have Lim Kit Siang, who is known for his righteousness, consistency and fight to ensure Sabah and Sarawak are not demoted in status from being one of the three territories (of Malaysia) to merely being one of the 13 states.
“There are more leaders in waiting, also known for their consistency. Are these not sufficient to tell what’s to come when PH forms the next federal and state governments?”
In his statement, Goviind said he doubted PH would ever implement all requirements and rights as specified in the MA63 because PH knows if it does, not only would Malaya become poor, it would have to borrow money from Sabah and Sarawak.
The Sabah PH manifesto promises, among others, a deputy prime minister’s post for Sabah and Sarawak, an increase in the oil royalty to 20% and for Sabah to get back 50% of the state’s revenue.
