PETALING JAYA: Darell Leiking has called on Prime Minister Najib Razak to sack deputy minister Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki from office following his comment that the Barisan Nasional (BN) government will not forsake its responsibility to make Malaysia an Islamic state.
The Parti Warisan Sabah deputy president said the remark was intolerable and ran counter to the decision of the nation’s founding fathers for it to remain secular.
“Does Najib really think that Malaysians, particularly Sabahans, will be happy with what Asyraf had said?” the Penampang MP asked..
“Asyraf must be held accountable for what he had said and should be reprimanded by the BN chairman (Najib) himself and better still, be removed from his post,” he said in a statement today.
On Oct 14, Asyraf, who is deputy minister in the prime minister’s department in charge of Islamic affairs, was reported by Bernama as telling a forum in Kelantan that the development of Islam was being strengthened and was a clear signal that the BN government was not shirking its responsibility to make Malaysia an Islamic state.
He said the government was providing the financial resources to empower Islam and that this year alone RM987 million was provided to the education ministry for Islamic education and RM559 million to the Malaysian Islamic development department (Jakim).
“This is simply intolerable because it is against what has been agreed to and can cause great anxiety, suspicion or division between Malaysian Muslims and non-Muslims,” Leiking said.
“And for a BN deputy federal minister to now come out with such outrageous suggestion only tells us how weak Najib is,” he added.
He said did not know if Asyraf had made the comment for political purposes, but added that it would leave an impact on Muslims.
He said first prime minister Tunku Abdul Rahman and other founding fathers had decided that Malaysia would be a secular country but were no longer around.
He said there is a need for the federal and state governments to come up with measures to ensure all Malaysians, particularly the younger generation, know and understand what had been agreed to and not deviate from the original ideals.
He also said he was perplexed to see more and more religious and racial issues coming out from the BN camp.
