Magistrate rejects three-day remand extension application, as his lawyer argues that investigation into his alleged remarks against ruler has been completed.
KUALA LUMPUR: Police failed to get a remand extension on Islamic preacher Wan Ji Wan Hussin today at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters, following his arrest for sedition on Friday.
According to his lawyer Zulhazmi Shariff, the police had put in an application to extend Wan Ji’s remand for three additional days.
“They asked for a further three days remand which I objected to and the magistrate then rejected their application,” he said, stating that the preacher has now been freed.
Zulhazmi said there was no reason for the police to detain the 35-year-old Wan Ji as the investigation has been completed.
Yesterday, the magistrate had allowed a two-day remand for the police to hold Wan Ji in order to complete their probe.
Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun said Wan Ji was arrested following a report lodged against him.
Wan Ji, who was recently appointed as the information officer to Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, was arrested shortly after delivering a Friday sermon at Masjid Jalan Sembilang, Seberang Jaya, Penang on Oct 13.
His arrest came just days after Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) officer Zamihan Mat Zin, who was also arrested under the Sedition Act, posted a picture of Wan Ji on social media with the words “Wan Ji mahu sistem raja dihapuskan” (Wan Ji wants to abolish the monarchy).
A Bernama report said a police report against Wan Ji was lodged by a surau committee in Taman Pauh Jaya, accusing him of insulting the royal institution and the sultans in a talk he allegedly made a few years ago.
Wan Ji had previously been charged in court in 2014 over comments he allegedly made on Facebook criticising the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.
