Rohani Abdul Karim says education ministry should set up rehabilitation or transition classes for these students to reduce the incidence of social problems in society.
PUTRAJAYA: Troubled students should not be suspended from school but rehabilitated or placed in transition classes as a form of punishment, Women, Family and Community Development Minister Rohani Abdul Karim suggested today.
Urging the education ministry to review the move to suspend wayward students from school, she said many of them mixed with the wrong people and were involved in crimes.
She noted that the seven teenagers held in connection with the fire that claimed the lives of 21 students and two teachers at the Darul Quran Ittifaqiyah Tahfiz centre in KL had been suspended from school much earlier.
“Was the suspension the best punishment for these troubled teens?
“As such, the role and responsibility of counselling teachers are very crucial in shaping them to get back to school,” she said after launching the National Counselling Month 2017 here today.
Rohani said the issue of suspension from school as a form of punishment had been brought up to the cabinet for further discussions.
“In fact, all ministries have been directed to propose intervention programmes to address current social problems,” she added.
