Khairy: Segregated education system to blame for lack of unity

Minister says the different schools under the education system mean that Malaysian students are growing up apart.

KUALA LUMPUR: Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin today blamed Malaysia’s segregated education system for the lack of unity in the country.

Speaking at a TN50x Dialogue session at Bangsar South here, he said although the education system was something that was “agreed upon”, it was also part of the problem.

“Whether or not we can rewrite that, I don’t know because this is the old agreement. We have different schools: national schools, Chinese schools, Tamil schools, tahfiz schools, and we have international and private schools.

“The end result is that our kids are growing up apart. That’s the big problem for us.”

Khairy added that there were things which were “intangible”, which would be difficult to achieve, and that unity was one of them.

When Malaysians were overseas, he said, they were proud to speak of the country’s diversity, but when they were in the country, the same diversity became a liability.

Urging Malaysians to celebrate diversity instead of merely accepting or tolerating it, he said such moments should not be reserved only for times when the country achieved victory in sports.

“We are Malaysians because we originated from different parts of the world but this is our home now, and we are better because we are together,” he said.
