CHUKAI: A former police officer pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here today to a charge of cheating a businessman of RM140,000 in a non-existent property investment scheme.
Mohd Salam Zainal Abidin, 31, who was previously with the Kemaman district police headquarters, was charged with cheating Tan Yunn Siong, 50, at 11.48am at the Kemaman branch of Bank Islam Malaysia Bhd on May 25, 2016.
His wife, Nurul Shahila Saayan, 28, who was charged with abetting him in committing the alleged offence, also pleaded not guilty.
The couple, through one Zamri Ismail, were alleged to have cheated Tan by deceiving him to invest in a property investment scheme, which they knew did not exist.
They were charged under Section 400 of the Penal Code and face imprisonment of up to 10 years, with whipping and a fine, if found guilty.
Judge Badrul Munir Mohd Hamdy set bail at RM10,000 in one surety for Salam, and RM5,000 in one surety for Nurul Shahila.
He also ordered the couple to surrender their passports to the court.
Salam could not post bail and was sent to the Marang Prison.
However, his wife, managed to raise the bail amount.
The court set Jan 29 for mention.
The prosecution was conducted by deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Fadli Mahmud, while the couple were represented by lawyers Mohd Nasir Yusof and Mohd Fauzi And Samad.
