He says they should be praised and given support for not banking on office jobs.
KUBANG PASU: University graduates who sell nasi lemak or become Uber drivers should be praised as they are independent and not ashamed of such work despite their high academic qualifications.
Kubang Pasu MP Mohd Johari Baharum said nobody should look down upon them but should instead show them support for not banking on office jobs.
“We should encourage the younger generation who are holding two jobs to earn more income.
“They are not picky and ashamed as they can get good income, which is better than being unemployed,” he told reporters after handing out offer letters to 56 students from the Kubang Pasu parliamentary constituency to enrol in the Mara Junior Science College at an event held at SMK Pulau Nyior, Jitra, today.
On Wednesday, PPBM chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad was quoted as saying it was shameful that many graduates had to work as Uber drivers or sell nasi lemak and the media should not portray this as a success.
The former prime minister also said the number of graduates who were not employed in the fields they had been trained was proof of the government’s failure to provide jobs to the people.
Johari, who is also deputy defence minister, said the government, through various agencies and departments, had provided many jobs and aid to graduates and other youths to improve their standard of living.
