PETALING JAYA: The Newbee team defeated Team Liquid to win ESL One Genting 2018, Malaysia’s most lucrative and prestigious Dota 2 tournament.
In a pulsating five-game final, the China-based world number four team defeated the Netherlands-based reigning world champion and world number two at Arena of Stars, Resorts World Genting, avenging their defeat to Team Liquid at last year’s world championship finals.
Speaking to The Star, Newbee player Song “Sccc” Chun, who led his team in the final with 44 kills and over 122,000 damage points dealt, said: “We are really happy with our win here.
“Every victory is sweet, but it is especially sweeter when you beat a strong team that puts up a good fight. We have finally lifted the curse of always losing to Team Liquid.”
He also thanked Newbee’s fans for their support throughout the tournament, and cautioned his team to maintain their focus, as the next Dota 2 tournament, SL i-League Invitational Season 4 in Shanghai, would be starting soon.
Newbee won US$160,000 (RM620,000) and 200 qualifying points, while, as runners-up, Team Liquid claimed US$80,000 (RM310,000) and 120 qualifying points.
Senior vice-president of Pro Gaming for ESL Ulrich Schulze said in 2019, ESL One Genting will likely be upgraded in status from a minor tournament to a major tournament.
He said, “All the good teams wanted and signed up to be here. The arena facilities at this venue show that it is equipped to be a major tournament. There is no reason to keep this a minor any longer.”
ESL, the world’s largest e-sports company, collaborated with Resorts World Genting to hold the tournament for the second time.
