Police to probe schoolgirl’s attempted suicide case

Penang's top cop vows "to leave no stone unturned" in a case that has shocked many netizens.

Thaiveegan_penangGEORGE TOWN: Penang police have vowed to investigate the case of M Vasanthapiriya, a Form Two student who had attempted to take her life after claiming that she was wrongfully accused of stealing her teacher’s mobile phone in school.

State police chief Commissioner Arumugam said they were in the midst of interviewing all parties involved in the matter and vowed to be “fair to all”.

“While we are deeply saddened over what has happened, we are going to investigate every aspect of this case. We are not going to leave any stone unturned.

“The police are interviewing all parties and we assure you that we will be fair to all,” he said when contacted.

Thaiveegan said Vasanthapiriya’s condition was critical and hoped she would recover soon to shed some light on what caused her to be suicidal.

“Our prayers are with the poor girl and I hope she wakes up to tell us her story,” he said.

Vasanthapiriya, 13, of SMK Methodist in Nibong Tebal, attempted to take her life at home after her pleas of innocence were not heeded by her accuser.

In the Jan 17 incident, the accuser, a teacher in her 40s, was alleged to have confined the student at her office, with two other teachers tagging along.

Vasanthapiriya was allegedly berated and threatened that it would be reported to the police if she did not own up. Later, she was confined to a room for nearly five hours without a break.

The accuser drove her back to her home and met her parents. When the parents stepped out with the accuser and her husband, Vasanthapiriya hanged herself with a shawl in her room.

She also left a note saying: “I did not steal your phone, teacher.” She is now in a coma and warded at the Seberang Jaya Hospital’s intensive care unit.

Yesterday, Penang Umno chief Zainal Abidin Osman said Vasanthapiriya was suffering from brain injuries and the best doctors were on hand to help her recover.
