Stop harassing us, Johor DAP rep tells Umno, supporters

Chen-Kah-EngPETALING JAYA: A Johor DAP assemblyman has told Umno and its supporters to stop harassing the opposition coalition while it is conducting activities with the people.

In a statement today, Stulang assemblyman Chen Kah Eng said Umno and its supporters should practise mature politics and stop intimidating the people who wished to meet their leaders.

“Be it BN or Pakatan Harapan, we have the right to do our programmes and get in touch with the people. Let the people decide who they want to pick in the coming 14th general election.

“What Umno did last night was putting political pressure on the warung (food stall) owner to stop our programme and bring its supporters to create chaos at our event.”

He was referring to the incident last night where a few Pakatan Harapan leaders were kicked out from their dialogue with the people at Kampung Bakar Bata, Johor.

Chen, DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang, PPBM secretary Osman Sapian and PKR Johor information chief Akmal Nasir were forced to leave the food stall after pressure from some villagers.

Lim, who is also Gelang Patah MP, was in the village to distribute mandarin oranges and hold a dialogue session with the locals at the warung.

While Lim and his fellow PH leaders were holding a press conference at the stall on the incident, the electricity was disconnected.

An ustaz and some residents then demanded that the media conference be stopped.

They also called on the event organisers to stop criticising Umno.

An individual, appearing to act as a mediator, asked the group to allow just 10 minutes for the press conference to finish.

Osman, who is also PH Johor secretary, claimed the villagers were paid to create chaos at the event.

He said the dialogue session was planned two weeks ago by PH and they had distributed banners and publicised the event on their Facebook pages.

“We obtained permission from the food stall owner to borrow his place to hold our event.

“I do not rule out the possibility that the local leaders do not like us there. What is more shocking was the village headman also joined in to provoke us,” Osman said.

Chen said Saturday’s incident showed Umno seemed to be afraid of PH and it was not confident of the public’s support for the party.

“Umno and BN are willing to do anything to stay in power and use scare tactics on the people.”

Chen told FMT that PH did not intend to lodge any police report on the incident as it did not involve any fighting.

Earlier today, Lim, in a statement, urged Johor Bahru MP Shahrir Samad to make a stand on the disruption and issue a clarification.
