The Amanah president says Amanah agreed to the allocation for parliamentary seats out of necessity.
SHAH ALAM: Amanah has made a huge sacrifice in negotiations for seats in Peninsular Malaysia in order for the opposition alliance to move forward.
Sources within the top leadership of DAP revealed that Amanah had initially wanted more seats.
Their initial demand had met with objections from other
Today, during the PH convention, it was announced that the Parliament seat allocation for Peninsular Malaysia was 52 for PPBM, 35 DAP, 51 PKR and only 27 would be contested by Amanah.
During the convention, PH chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad had also paid special tribute to Amanah president Mohamad Sabu for his party’s “generosity”. Mahathir’s remarks were greeted with a standing ovation from all PH leaders.
Mahathir said it was Amanah that had made the seat allocation negotiations a success.
The big sacrifice was done in order to save PH, said Mohamad, better known as Mat Sabu.
“We want PH to be a success and we do not want any obstruction to our success.
“For PH to exist, we have to make this sacrifice.
“There are many obstructions inside and outside the coalition,” he said.
So far, only the allocation for parliamentary seats has been settled, PH has not negotiated state seats yet, he told FMT.
“This is only Parliament and we will ask for more when we negotiate state seats.
“There are chances for them (Amanah leaders) to get state seats when we discuss them.
“We needed to make this sacrifice because without it PH might have fallen through.”
Some party leaders were initially shocked at Amanah’s decision, Mohamad said.
“Their reaction is normal.
“These leaders are not new, they are veterans in politics.
“For a short while they were stunned but then they accepted it.”
PH today confirmed that Mahathir would be its prime ministerial candidate should it win the next polls while PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail would be made the deputy prime minister.
The announcement made at the PH convention here ends all speculation about the coalition’s choice to head the government should they come into power.
