BN: Choosing Mahathir as PM candidate is against ‘reformasi’ goals

The ruling coalition says one of original aims of movement was to put an end to the Mahathir era.

Aziz-KaprawiPETALING JAYA: Sri Gading MP Aziz Kaprawi has slammed the opposition for not being sincere in implementing its reformasi goals.

“They still want to maintain an old leader as their PM.

“It shows they have failed to prepare younger leaders to take over as leaders,” he told FMT.

One of the goals of the

reformasi movement, which began in 1998 under PKR, was to ensure the resignation of the longest-serving prime minister and to put an end to the Mahathir era.

The deputy transport minister said it was ironic that after years of criticising Dr Mahathir Mohamad, during his premiership as prime minister from 1981 to 2003, the opposition now had agreed to appoint the Pakatan Harapan chairman as their leader.

PH today confirmed Mahathir as its prime ministerial candidate should it win the next polls.

PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail is be made the deputy prime minister.

PH also announced it would pursue all legal avenues to free jailed leader Anwar Ibrahim, with the aim of making him the eighth prime minister of Malaysia.

“They may say the appointment is on the basis of a so-called transition. But it is a weak (plan) because Mahathir is still their candidate,” Aziz said.

He added that the move also showed that PKR had failed to use “reformasi” as the way forward.

“I don’t see the future of Malaysia if they want to keep backpedalling,” he said.

PAS: Oil royalty issue not forgotten

PAS MP Siti Zailah Mohd Yusoff said the rakyat were aware of Mahathir’s past and she believed the voters were matured enough to make the right choice.

“In Kelantan, we are still feeling the impact after oil royalties were taken away,” she told FMT.

For years, the Kelantan government has been demanding payment of royalties on petroleum extracted off its coastline, as enjoyed by its neighbour, Terengganu.

The Kelantan government under the late Nik Aziz Nik Mat had filed a suit against Petronas, but the issue was not taken up after Nik Aziz died in February last year.

Relations between PAS and Umno improved after Nik Aziz’s death, and Kelantan now receives “wang ehsan” from the federal government under the administration of Prime Minister Najib Razak.

The Rantau Panjang MP said: “We all know Mahathir and what he has done (during his leadership).”
