GEORGE TOWN: A Penang state executive councillor today claimed he had received several documents on alleged corruption and abuse of power within the Penang Regional Development Authority (Perda), a federal agency tasked with improving the economic standards of Bumiputeras in Penang.
State Health, Agriculture and Rural Development Committee chairman Dr Afif Bahardin revealed at a press conference today that the documents contained allegations of irregularities in the running of Perda, through Perda Ventures Incorporated.
He claimed the documents had mentioned several individuals connected to Perda Ventures Incorporated
“Based on the documents I received, I would like to urge the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and the Perda chairman to confirm if indeed a report has been lodged with MACC on the allegations of corruption.
“Can the MACC confirm the status of the report or investigations being carried out against Perda Ventures Incorporated?
“Also, can the chairman deny any abuse in the administration of Perda and prove that Perda is free from corruption?” Afif asked.
He then distributed a copy of the documents, containing the allegations of corruption against Perda, to the media.
It is unclear who had lodged the report with MACC, if any, and who had furnished Afif with the documents.
FMT has contacted Penang MACC chief Aziz Aban and is awaiting his comments on the matter.
FMT has also reached out to the Perda chairman and is awaiting his response.
