PETALING JAYA: Dr Mahathir Mohamad today questioned the amount of government aid for the disabled, saying it has not seen an increase since his time as prime minister 15 years ago.
The Pakatan Harapan chairman told a dialogue with the disabled community today that the amount given to the community ignored the rising costs of living.
“The disabled community feel the pinch just like others too,” he said.
“There are some who are unable to earn an income but are given RM200 monthly, that may be enough in 1960s, not now,” he said, adding that the government’s revenue during his time was just one-third of the current revenue of RM180 billion.
Answering a question later, Mahathir said PH was prepared to consider candidates from among the disabled community at the next polls.
“We need to look at their role after the elections,” he said.
Saying the disabled community in Japan was self-reliant and part of the larger society, Mahathir said this was the goal of a PH government.
He also agreed to a suggestion by a participant that PH’s manifesto should give more focus on improving the lives of the disabled community.
