Under the new system, students are no longer separated based on academic abilities, with clever students helping weaker ones.
PUTRAJAYA: Schools in Putrajaya are no longer segregating students based on their academic performance from this year, Putrajaya Federal Territory education director Roaini Jaafar said.
She said the move was also welcomed by parents as students were no longer separated based on such criteria.
“This enables the excellent students, who are well-versed in reading, calculating and writing, to co-operate with and guide the other children.
“We are no longer separating them because we do not want to emphasise on academic achievements.
“Education has many aspects, such as cooperation, communication, collaboration and creativity, that must be exposed to children.
“We want them to help each other,” she said when met after visiting Sekolah Kebangsaan Putrajaya Presint 11 (1) here today.
Education director-general Amin Senin had recently said class-streaming — the act of segregating students based on their academic performance — had been stopped.
He was reported as saying that the practice was not a policy but was implemented by the schools to improve academic achievements following the School Average Grade (GPS).
SK Putrajaya Presint 11 (1) Parent Teacher Association (PIBG) president Mohd Shahizan Abdullah welcomed the changes at the school.
“I hope the system is a success and effective with the better students helping weaker students,” he said.
