KOTA KINABALU: A youth who went missing after his vehicle was swept away by a waterhead in Sabah’s west coast district of Kota Marudu was found dead today.
Muhammad Asyraf Nirajim, 19, was found 1.3km away from the spot where the MPV was swept away, district police chief DSP Izaan Abdullah said.
His body was found on the banks of Sungai Bintasan Darat by villagers during a search-and-rescue operation.
The mishap occurred at Kampung Sungai Bintasan Darat at 2.30am yesterday.
Asyraf and six family members were heading home from a wedding reception to Kampung Tigaman when the incident happened.
A column of water suddenly appeared and inundated the road they were on and swept the MPV away towards the river.
The other six managed to escape but Asyraf was trapped in the vehicle and disappeared.
This is the second fatal waterhead incident in four months in the state.
In September, a woman was killed while her husband and son injured after a waterhead cascaded down a hillslope and swept away their 4WD vehicle to a river in Kalabakan, Tawau.
