KUANTAN: Kuantan MP Fuziah Salleh has put several measures in place to help her constituents in the event of massive flooding in the district.
This comes after the Malaysian Meterological Department issued a warning yesterday that Kuantan would likely experience heavy rainfall and floods.
Speaking to FMT, Fuziah said her NGO Kuantan Prihatin Disaster Relief Team has been monitoring the situation and was ready to provide immediate assistance should evacuation become necessary.
“We activated the team as soon as the alert was given out yesterday,” she said.
“As of noon today, Sungai Lembing is flooded but still manageable and Sungai Lembing is upstream to Sungai Kuantan so it will flow down here.
“Bandar Kuantan is okay still but anything is possible if the water level in Sungai Lembing continues to rise.”
According to Fuziah, Kuantan Prihatin has had training on handling boats and were also trained to provide other assistance to flood victims.
She said the danger areas were the areas close to the rivers, including Sungai Kuantan, Sungai Lembing and Sungai Belat.
“Another one to look out for is Sungai Pahang which flows into Pekan.
“The areas in my constituency that border Pekan are most vulnerable but Sungai Pahang will flood when Temerloh floods.
“Kuantan is like a basin. We are in a low lying area right next to an estuary.”
