EXCLUSIVE: Is opposition shaping new bloc with PAS, no DAP?

PAS, PKR, PPBM and Ikatan make a full house, rivalling Pakatan Harapan

pas-pkr-ppbmPETALING JAYA: Are PAS, PKR, Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) and Parti Ikatan Bangsa Malaysia (Ikatan) forming a political alliance separate from Pakatan Harapan?

Last night, in PAS’ stronghold of Kelantan, some 2,000 people attended a ceramah, which saw leaders of the four parties share a stage.

The four opposition parties’ coming together for a series of mega-ceramahs is painting a picture that a new alliance may be on the cards.

It began in October, when PPBM president Muhyiddin Yassin shared a stage with PAS’ top leadership in Terengganu in a mega-ceramah.

This continued when a similar programme was held in Selangor through a Ceramah Mega Rakyat, attended by thousands of PAS, PKR, PPBM and Ikatan supporters to witness their leaders speaking together.

Once again, Muhyiddin was present, alongside PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man and PKR central leadership council member, R Sivarasa.

The presence of a top PKR leader had been hotly anticipated, after PAS said the joint-ceramah with PKR and PPBM was a step towards the formation of a separate political bloc, which excluded PAS’ adversaries DAP and Amanah.

Then Selangor PAS secretary Khairuddin Othman said the party was seeking to form such a bloc, at least in Selangor.

At last night’s Kelantan ceramah, which saw the four parties share a stage, present were PAS vice-president Nik Mohd Amar Abdullah, PKR vice-president Tian Chua, PKR Youth deputy chief Afif Bahardin, Kelantan PAS youth chief Ahmad Fadli Shaari, PPBM youth’s Deen Qassim and a member of Ikatan’s supreme council.

At the same time, in Kedah, PAS and PPBM joined forces through an assembly called Himpunan Derita Rakyat Kedah 2.0 (HDRK) in Sungai Petani. Present at the assembly were PPBM deputy president and former Kedah menteri besar Mukhriz Mahathir alongside Kedah PAS’ top guns.

Kedah PAS commissioner Dr Ahmad Fakhruddin Syeikh Fakhrurazu said HDRK showed PAS was open to working with any party which respected PAS and its policies, noting this openness was also reflected in joint-ceramahs elsewhere.

He said HDRK was however the first time in which PAS and PPBM jointly spoke up for the people while sharing political views on the state of administration under Barisan Nasional.

Prior to this, PAS has openly rejected any cooperation with DAP and Amanah, who are part of Pakatan Harapan, alongside PKR.

PAS has also yet to decide if it will enter into an electoral pact with the opposition to ensure one-to-one fights with BN in the coming general election (GE14).

In December, PPBM signed an electoral pact with Paktan Harapan but did not join the coalition.

At present, PAS and PPBM have not formalised any political cooperation, although PAS and Ikatan are in an opposition bloc called Gagasan Sejahtera.

PAS which was once part of the now-defunct Pakatan Rakyat alongside DAP and PKR, still works with PKR politically, especially in the PKR-led Selangor government.
