Terengganu and Kelantan on flood alert

PETALING JAYA: Terengganu is evacuating some residents to relief centres as water levels rise in five rivers there while Kelantan is keeping an eye on three rivers that have risen to alert levels.

Continuous heavy rain in some districts in Terengganu have already caused several low-lying areas to be flooded since early today.

According to the Terengganu Drainage and Irrigation Department’s official website, publicinfobanjir.water.gov.my. five rivers have swollen to above the normal level.

It said Sungai Telemong in Kuala Ping, near Hulu Terengganu, is at the danger level.

Two rivers in the Setiu district have risen to above the alert level, namely Sungai Chalok, which has risen 50% above its normal level of 5 metres Sungai Nerus in Kampung Langkap, which is at 20 metres (normal level is 17 metres).

Two other rivers, Sungai Besut in Kampung La recorded a water level of 19.82 metres (normal level is 16.5 metres) and Sungai Marang at Jambatan Pengkalan Berangan is more than twice its normal level of 1 metre.

Over in Kelantan, three main rivers have swollen above the alert level as at 10 am today, following heavy rain in the interior of the state since last night.

According to the Drainage and Irrigation Department’s website, http://ift.tt/2iP1HlU/, the water level in Sungai Galas, Dabong, is 34.15 metres, above the alert level of 32 metres.

As for Sungai Lebir in Tualang, the water levels are just above their normal levels.
