The police stopped over 200 motorcyclists and pillion riders for checks in the operations
GEORGE TOWN: A teenager here is spending New Year’s Day in a police lockup after he knocked down a policeman with his motorcycle at a roadblock early this morning.
The 16-year-old was trying to escape when traffic constable Muhammad Ameer Jamalidan signalled him to stop in the police’s New Year and road thug operations on Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah at about 4.30am.
“While trying to flee, the teen knocked into Ameer, causing him injuries on his brow, nose and teeth.
“The teen then lost balance and fell on the road. He was arrested by other officers at the scene,” Southwest District police chief Superintendent Anuar Omar said in a statement.
The teen from Bayan Lepas is being investigated for obstructing an officer of the law from discharging his duties, and for causing hurt, he said.
Ameer, he said, is being treated at the Pantai Hospital in Bayan Baru.
Anuar also said police stopped 223 motorcyclists and pillion riders for checks during the traffic operations from 10pm yesterday to 6am today in Bayan Baru and Bayan Lepas.
“We arrested three men tested positive of drugs.
“We checked 149 motorcycles and seized 35 of them. We also issued 137 summonses for various traffic offences,” he said.
