Our readers consumed political news with an appetite last year.
PETALING JAYA: From a shell-shocked doctor who was racially abused by an elderly man whom she was trying to help, to a RM45 purse that made it to the world’s most celebrated presidential palace, here are some of the most read stories on FMT this year.
The almost 12-hour live coverage of the Bersih 5 protests in Kuala Lumpur topped the list of the most read FMT reports this year.
Following closely was a report on Jamal Yunos, the Umno branch leader whose antics and statements continued to attract nationwide attention.
Just two weeks ago, a short response on a WhatsApp media group he hosts, attacking songstress Siti Nurhaliza for not being able to bear children, went viral, even attracting a stinging response from a private hospital which specialises in fertility treatment.
He was responding to criticism from the popular singer for his “towel protest” in Shah Alam, when he appeared in a towel to protest the Selangor authorities’ pre-announced water cuts. It was one of a series of political stunts by Jamal this year, whose Red Shirts movement to stop Bersih protesters has many times ended up in violence.
In July, the authorities banned Rayani Air, which branded itself a Shariah-compliant airline, breaching its licence terms. Aviation authority Mavcom said the airline lacked the financial and management capacity to continue operating as a commercial airline.
Complaints poured in over the failure to refund passengers who had bought tickets, but that did not stop CEO Ravi Alagendrran from saying he hoped the government would “give Rayani Air a second chance to operate”. Which never came.
In June, Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng was charged with two counts of corruption over the purchase of a bungalow. But it was his defiance about three months earlier, on March 24, which made the affair among the most read stories this year.
“The person who sold the house to me has come forward. The person who donated the RM2.6 billion to Najib on the other hand, hasn’t. I have practised all levels of accountability that are not practised by BN leaders,” said the DAP leader referring to the Umno president and prime minister.
The case of a 26-year-old woman who was raped and robbed in her house in Jalan Gasing, Petaling Jaya, in May, was also among the most read stories in 2016, underlining public outrage over crime in Malaysia.
In August, a purse carried by the wife of the Singapore prime minister during the couple’s official visit to the White House was the most viewed for many days, and widely shared among local Facebook users, drawing praise and at the same time comments comparing that against the extravagant taste of some local VVIPs.
The Umno general assembly in November was largely a tame affair, but a speech by its Puteri delegate telling government leaders to stop insulting people’s intelligence became an instant hit among readers.
“Don’t tell us the economy is fine when we can see our friends losing their jobs and the prices of household items go up,” said Norsarfinaz Mohd Azman, who heads Jerantut Umno’s Puteri division.
The year 2016 began with a Facebook post by a young medical doctor of ethnic Indian origin, recounting how an elderly Malay man hurled a racist slur at her when she tried to help him after he had just fallen off his motorcyle.
“Aku tak nak keling datang dekat aku, tolong aku ke, banyak orang boleh tolong (I don’t want a ‘keling’ coming near me, or to help me, lots of people can help me),” he told Dr Shalini Paramaswaran, who then called an ambulance and still ensured the man was not moved in case of further injuries.
