PETALING JAYA: A total of 31 flood relief centres have been opened in Terengganu and 10 in Kelantan, as heavy rains continue to lash the East Coast.

According to the welfare department’s InfoBanjir app, some 1,509 people in Terengganu and 1,212 people in Kelantan have been evacuated to the relief centres.

The worst hit area is Hulu Terengganu, where over 800 people have been evacuated.

A Terengganu Flood Operations Centre spokesperson said the centre has been busy evacuating entire families all day, including the young and old, to nearby centres.

He said: “They are okay. They live near flood-prone areas. They are afraid and do not want to take their chances at home. Not after the 2014 flood tragedy.”

In Kelantan too a Flood Operations Centre spokesman told FMT that evacuees are “so afraid of reliving the 2014 experience. They are hoping to have a flood-free new year.”

In Terengganu, there were non-stop heavy showers since 8pm last night. As a result, water levels at six rivers in Terengganu are reaching dangerous levels.

These rivers are Sungai Marang, Sungai Besut at Kampung LA, Sungai Besut at Jambatan Keruak, Sungai Chalok, Sungai Nerus and Sungai Telemong.

Terengganu Fire and Rescue Department Deputy Director (Operations) said flash flooding had hit some areas such as Hulu Terengganu, while in other areas, people were being evacuated for fear that rivers would overflow due to the heavy rainfall.

Meanwhile, Terminal Bersepadu Selatan’s has yet to receive any notifications of cancelled express bus trips to and from Kelantan and Terengganu.
