MELAKA: The country recorded a 2.7% drop in crimes this year, according to statistics from the police.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Noor Rashid Ibrahim also vowed to produce better results in 2017.

“We will work harder next year to reduce the crime index by 5% but this will only be possible with the cooperation of the people,” he said.

He said there were 112,000 cases reported this year compared to 115,225 in 2015.

He attributed the decline to measures by the police and others in combating crime.

“It will be less impactful if the police were to solve crimes alone. We will only maximise the impact if (we) can get members of the public to discuss and plan how to deal with the current crime cases.

“To me, this is the approach that we’re implementing continuously and it is also among the approaches (being implemented) by the developed countries,” he told reporters after closing a seminar on modern crime prevention at Bandar Hilir here today.

Noor Rashid said police was now planning a more effective crime prevention strategy through “community policing”, incorporating educators and community leaders.
