What about the "ikan yu" (sharks) of corruption, asks Lim Kit Siang, let alone tigers and buayas.
PETALING JAYA: The downsizing of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s (MACC) special operations division shows that from now it would arrest and prosecute only the “ikan bilis” of corruption, not the “sharks”, said the DAP opposition leader.
Lim Kit Siang said MACC has handled prominent cases related to 1Malaysia Development Berhad and Federal Land Development Authority (Felda) but the move to downsize it, paints a negative picture of Malaysia’s commitment in fighting graft.
“The message is very clear – MACC should arrest and prosecute more ‘ikan bilis’ but it should leave the ‘ikan yu’ (sharks) alone.
“China can catch and imprison ‘tigers’ while Indonesia net the ‘crocodiles’ in their anti-corruption campaigns, but Malaysia cannot go on a spree against ‘sharks’,” he wrote in a press statement today.
The Gelang Patah MP was responding to news reports that the division formed about five years ago to investigate high profile graft amounting to RM1 million and more might be restructured or scaled down in size.
Some of the high profile cases handled by the division included SRC International Sdn Bhd, a former 1MDB subsidiary now under the Finance Ministry, and Felda’s purchase of a hotel property in London.
It is also investigating a multimillion ringgit corruption case in Sabah.
Lim predicts 2017 will see Malaysia continued to be haunted and hounded by the multibillion-dollar “1MDB kleptocratic money-laundering scandal”.
