Zahid promises RM3m more for SMC if Indian students excel

He says Sri Murugan Centre had earlier received same amount in May to raise educational level of Indian students.

zahid-sri-muruganBAGAN DATUK: An additional allocation of RM3 million will be channelled to the Sri Murugan Centre (SMC) if it can show that Indian students have excelled academically due to its educational activities, says Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

SMC is a voluntary organisation established in 1982 to carry out activities to raise the educational level of Indian students in the country.

Zahid said in May this year, the government had given the same amount in support of SMC.

“I am proud of SMC’s role and really touched by its efforts. If all (the students) obtain good results, I will add another RM3 million. This is my promise to SMC.”

He said this in his speech at the launch of the Vetri “Road To Victory 2018” programme, which was attended by about 160 Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Tamil (SJKT) Year Six pupils, here, today.

At the event, Zahid also praised and congratulated SMC founder and director M.Thambirajah, a former teacher, for coming up with the idea of setting up the centre.

“Whatever the religion, community or race, teachers must be respected by the students.

“SMC teaches students to respect their teachers and parents and this is a good value taught by SMC,” he said.
