JOHOR BAHRU: The Registrar of Societies (RoS) says the waiver proposed by Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) is unprecedented and a violation of the Societies Act 1966 as well as the party’s constitution.

Its director-general Surayati Ibrahim said she will now have to refer to legal advisers about the matter and would need a week to scrutinise the proposed waivers.

“There are many waivers proposed. I am not sure whether the Societies Act 1966 empowers the RoS to allow the waivers sought by the party,” she told reporters, here today.

Surayati said the proposed waivers included how to hold the annual general meeting (AGM) and how to amend the party’s constitution.

“So, I am not sure whether the RoS or the department can allow the waivers. This is because PPBM wants waivers to things in the party’s constitution.

“The RoS has done its job in accordance with the law. As I said earlier, an organisation should abide by its own constitution and the Societies Act 1966,” she told reporters after attending a cheque presentation ceremony of the Johor Residents’ Association officiated by Deputy Home Minister Nur Jazlan Mohamed at Kompleks Tan Sri Mohamed Rahmat, here today.

The RoS may deregister PPBM if the party fails to resolve its internal issues and hold the AGM which it should have held in September.

The party’s failure to hold the AGM was due to problems involving its branches and divisions.
