Menteri Besar Zambry Abd Kadir says it is not true that the GDP has declined.
IPOH: Menteri Besar Zambry Abd Kadir has denied the opposition’s claim that Perak’s gross domestic product (GDP) has declined.
He said Perak’s per capita GDP surged 15.1% to RM18,207 in 2010 from the previous year and the figure jumped to RM27,246 in 2016.
The GDP at constant prices rose from RM43.3 million in 2010 to RM60.4 million at a compounded annual growth rate of 5.7%, he added.
“This is testament to the achievement and success of Barisan Nasional. Of course, the opposition may not be happy with official figures released by the Department of Statistics (DoS) as the figures don’t work in their favour,” he said when winding-up the debate on the Perak Budget 2018 at the state assembly here today.
Zambry also denied Ngeh Koo Ham’s (DAP-Sitiawan) claim that after the political coup in 2009, Perak’s per capita GDP dropped sharply to RM14,457 or 7.32%.
“Based on DoS’ figures, Perak’s per capita GDP in 2009 was RM15,809 instead of RM14,457 as claimed. Indeed the figure fell from RM16,552 in 2008, a decrease of RM743 or 4.48%,” he said.
On another note, Zambry (BN-Pangkor) said the state government would turn Pangkor into a duty-free island featuring a healthy lifestyle based on a “family paradise” concept where visitors could spend their money on crockery, designer clothes and chocolates.
“We are also in the midst of discussions on adding items such as crystals, jewellery, kitchen utensils, bags and so on,” he said.
