Armed forces veterans told to ignore opposition

Johari-Baharum-atmJITRA: Veteran members of the armed forces (ATM) were today reminded not to be influenced by quarters with political interests working to topple the government.

Deputy Defence Minister Mohd Johari Baharum said he had received reports of some veteran ATM members using a political platform to condemn the government in pursuit of their own political ambition.

“Now I see there are veterans aiming to become elected representatives and they are the ones who provoke other veterans for their own political interest, despite the various aid and perks given to them by the government,” he told reporters at the awarding of the Pingat Jasa Malaysia at the National Youth Skills Training Institute yesterday.

Also present was ATM Veteran Affairs Department director-general Major-General Mohamad Khir Abdullah.

Earlier in his speech, Johari said there was no certainty that a change in government would bring better changes, as what happened in several countries in the Middle East.

“Countries like Libya, Iraq and Lebanon, were peaceful and developed countries before, but because of politics and provocations, the people toppled the government, but the situation is far worse until today,” he said.

He also called on retired ATM members to join the relevant associations so that they would not miss out on government assistance.

At the event, a total of 242 ATM veterans and widows of ATM veterans from Kedah and Perlis received the PJM award.
