SIBU: Sibu police chief ACP Mohd Kamal Kordi confirmed yesterday that police had been quietly checking on slain Ting Meng Min for his alleged connection with illegal drug trade before he was shot dead on Saturday night.

He said police had received information on such an allegation, and they did not make public their anti-crime proactive action.

Mohd Kamal said this yesterday when asked by reporters whether Ting and others were involved in drug deals, as claimed in Internet postings that had gone viral after the shooting on Saturday.

Mohd Kamal had earlier said they were probing Saturday’s killing from the angle of gangsterism, revenge and business rivalry.

Police had also admitted illegal drug trade was another angle they were probing on.

The drug involvement allegation went viral on Facebook after one netizen described slain Ting as one of `The Four Drug Lords of Sarawak’.

The netizen also posted photographs of the four, including that of Ting.

Police have not commented whether the online allegations were exaggerated or untrue, but Mohd Kamal Kordi said police had been frustrated by the Internet postings about the shooting.

In a statement to reporters, Mohd Kamal called on the public to stop posting pictures or videos related to the shooting, saying this would jeopardise police investigation.

He also did not want the postings to stir public fear.

The police chief called on the public not to be unduly alarmed, assuring them that they (police) had an iron grip over the town’s security.

On Saturday’s shooting, the second murder of the year, Mohd Kamal said the two cases were not related.

He reiterated they were probing the shooting in the light of gangsterism, revenge and other criminal elements.

“The public should work with us to solve this case soonest.”

Meanwhile, the Chinese national, Xiao Fen, who was injured in the shooting, is recovering in hospital.

A police source said the 22-year-old from Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province, could now talk, and her condition was stable.

“Police have recorded her statement concerning the crossfire between two groups at the coffee shop.”

It was said Xiao Fen had come to Sarawak a year ago and was a waitress in a pub in Miri.

Xiao Fen is said to have come to Sibu with Ting on Friday.

“The Wenzhou woman was shot on her back shoulder and wrist. She collapsed after Ting had collapsed.”

Ting died an hour later in a private specialist hospital.

In another development of the case, police yesterday remanded two men in their 30s for seven days to help in the probe.

The two detainees surrendered themselves to the police on Sunday night after the police looked for them.
