CYBERJAYA: Children will have a greater voice in the decision-making process in matters affecting them with the appointment of two child representatives under the proposed amendments to the Child Act 2001.
Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali said the two representatives would assist the children to better deal with issues relating to their care, protection, rehabilitation, development and participation.
He said the representatives would be placed under the National Council for Children and Child Welfare Teams and would be appointed by the Women, Family and Community Development Minister as recommended by the Social Welfare Department.
“The appointment of these representatives is a manifestation to include children in decision-making that is affecting them,” he said in his opening speech at the Universiti Islam Malaysia (UIM) International Convention on Wisdom 2016 (ICW 2.0).
His speech text was read out by Deputy Solicitor General II, Datuk Engku Nor Faizah Engku Atek.
The International Convention on Wisdom themed “Unifying the World”, brings scholars and delegates from around the world to share the ideal wisdom as a core value for the promotion of world harmony.
Apandi said the amended Child Act 2001, which was tabled for the first reading in December last year in Parliament, was awaiting its second and third reading at the next sitting in March.
