155 Left Homeless After Squatter Colony Goes Up In Smoke

 A fire at a squatter colony at Jalan Kebun Teh Lama near here Friday has left 155 people homeless.

Johor Baharu Fire and Rescue chief Ibrahim Omar said 27 houses were razed to the ground in the 5pm incident.

However, as of 9.30pm, no casualties were reported, he said in a statement.

He said they were alerted about the fire at 5.18pm and managed bring the conflagration under control at 7.49pm.

Forty-one firemen who came in 12 fire engines are still doing mopping up operations.

Earlier, there was widespread panic among the residents when the fire broke out.

Bernama reporters who arrived at the scene witnessed residents scuttling out of their homes and trying to salvage whatever they could.

A victim, Haniyah Adnan, 50, said she only managed to escape with her grandchild and could not save any belongings because the fire spread very fast.

“I was cooking in the kitchen when I heard people screaming “Api!”, “Api!” (Fire! Fire!). I quickly rushed into the living room to grab my grandchild and escaped together with his parents,” said the mother of four.
