Sabah Umno Youth says use of doctored video reveals desperation of opposition in state.
PETALING JAYA: A Sabah Umno Youth leader has filed a police report over a video clip that was edited using footage taken from The Star TV and The Star Online, and called for authorities to pursue the case under the new Anti-Fake News Act 2018.
Mohammad Bahrin Abd Karim, who is state Umno Youth assistant secretary, said the video which is being widely shared, showed the desperation of the opposition in the state.
“The viral video on alleged high-profile corruption cases in Sabah was heavily edited to make it look as if it is an original Star Online news report.
“This shows how desperate the opposition has become.
“I also praise Star Media Group for quickly issuing a statement denying it is their video and promising to take serious action over the unauthorised use of their footage and logo,” Bahrin told reporters outside the Karamunsing district police headquarters in Kota Kinabalu today.
Bahrin added the doctored video is an excellent example of how fake news is used in an attempt to dupe the people into thinking that all that was compiled in the video — including the visuals, interviews and voiceovers — come from a single credible source.
“This is the sort of dirty tactics that the opposition has resorted to. Of course, once it goes viral, their keyboard warriors will go to town to spin the story,” he said.
Yesterday, Star Media Group issued an official denial on the video.
“There is a video clip circulating on social media which features the former Sabah Credit Corporation general manager George Ginibun.
“In the video, there has been unauthorised use of The Star TV and The Star Online logo and its video clips.
“The Star has consulted its lawyers and will take the necessary action.
“The Star states that it did not produce the said video in any manner and has no association with it.”
