Blackout 505: Five activists freed of all charges

Freedom comes five years after rally to protest against 2013 general election, as prosecution failed to prove the charge.

KUALA LUMPUR: Five years after a 2013 general election protest, five activists were acquitted and discharged today on having taken part in the gathering at the compound of Masjid Ar-Rahman Universiti Malaya, a restricted area.

They are Muhammad Safwan Anang, 29; Ekhsan Bukharee Badarul Hisham, 27; Adam Adly Abd Halim, 30; Mohamed Bukhari Mohamed Sufian, 28; and Khairul Anuar Ahmad Zainuddin, 38.

Sessions judge Zainal Abidin Kamarudin held that the prosecution had failed to prove the case beyond reasonable doubt.

The five men were alleged to have committed the offence between noon and 1.15pm on June 22, 2013 and were charged under the Peaceful Assembly Act.

The charge carries a maximum fine of RM10,000 upon conviction.

The protest was one of several rallies under the label Blackout 505 which were carried out by political supporters unhappy with the 2013 general election results.
