‘Cosplay killer’ sentenced to death over 2013 murder

High Court finds Poon Wai Hong guilty of murdering teenage cosplay enthusiast Ng Yuk Tim and disposing of her remains in a suitcase.

Court finds man’s decision to dispose of victim’s remains in a suitcase indicated his intention to kill her.

SHAH ALAM: The High Court today sentenced to death a man who had murdered a teenager and stuffed her remains in a suitcase in 2013.

High Court judge Azman Husin passed down the death sentence on Poon Wai Hong, who was dubbed the “cosplay killer”, after finding him guilty of murdering 15-year-old cosplay enthusiast Ng Yuk Tim.

“The prosecution had proven its case against Poon, beyond a reasonable doubt,” he said.

The court also found that Poon’s testimony contradicted that of the experts called by the prosecution.

“The circumstantial evidence showed the deceased was hit by a dumbbell (weight) on her head and there were injuries on her body.

“However, the accused contended she fell down and hit her head on the dumbbell,” Azman said.

The court found that Poon’s decision to dispose of Ng’s remains by stuffing her body into a suitcase indicated his intention to kill her.

Poon, who is now 28 years old, was represented by senior lawyer Rajpal Singh while deputy public prosecutor Lokman Kassim appeared for the prosecution.

Rajpal said Poon will be appealing against the court’s decision.

Poon, who was self-employed, was accused of murdering Ng on Oct 21, 2013 at Kampung Cempaka, Kelana Jaya.

The suitcase containing her body was discarded at Jalan Kebun Nenas, Shah Alam, but was found the next day.

It was previously reported that she was killed by a male friend, after he tried to make sexual advancements towards her.

The incident happened at the man’s house after she had gone to his house to work on cosplay costumes for an event.
