He was found guilty of issuing statements against Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah as well as other religious matters through his Facebook account.
SHAH ALAM: A free-lance public speaker was sentenced to nine months’ jail by the Sessions Court here today for issuing seditious statements to insult the Sultan of Selangor via Facebook six years ago.
Judge Mohd Sabri Ismail handed down the sentence on Wan Ji Wan Hussin, 35, after he was found guilty of issuing the statements against Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah as well as other religious matters through his Facebook account wanji.attaaduddi.
The offence was committed at the Selangor State Secretary Housing Office, 5th Floor, Sultan Salehuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Building, Section 5 here at 10am on Nov 5, 2012.
Wan Ji was charged under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948, which carries a fine not exceeding RM5,000 or a jail term of up to three years or both.
The court, however, granted the accused, who was represented by lawyer Mohd Radzlan Jalaludin, a stay of execution pending appeal to the High Court and allowed him to be released on a bail of RM5,000 in one surety.
Earlier, deputy public prosecutor Naliatul Huzaimi Ab Rasip urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence considering the seriousness of the offence.
“The accused issued the statements on Facebook which could be accessed all over the world and the sentences used were rude not only to the Sultan of Selangor but if directed to any individual,” she said.
Radzlan appealed for a light sentence on the grounds that his client’s wife suffers from diabetes and she has to care for five children, aged between a month and 13 years.
