ENVIOUS WITH DS NAJIB, BR1M IS TARGETED FOR DR MAHATHIR’S POLITICAL GIMMICK

It seems that Dr Mahathir’s politics has rotten to the core that even 1Malaysia People’s Aid (BR1M), the government policy to aid the targeted poor and low-income group, is considered as a corruption practice and illegal. No one seems to agree to his calls including his staunch supporter and his political party Vice President, none other than Kadir Jasin who recently wrote in his Facebook to urge Malaysians to accept the aid.The latest, Wan Azizah as Dr Mahathir’s political ally and PKR President, has also expressed her disagreement in a press conference session, should BR1M is classified as corruption whereas the cash aid is clearly channelled to the rakyat for it is their

right to receive them.

Oddly enough when even among the opposition leaders have mixed interpretations on BR1M that DAP, PAN and PKR has aggressively opened up BR1M registration counter throughout the country. Is Dr Mahathir including his allies of friendly to corruption practices too?

If Dr Mahathir argued that BR1M as a scheme to gain political mileage and in particular the ruling party Barisan Nasional, it is him who politicised the aid whilst it is executed as the government responsibility to the rakyat. In fact, the BN government does not favour any particular group when the welfare of the people is concerned.

The fact is that BN government does not discriminate against low-income groups, regardless of where they live or who they voted for. It is proven when during the recent Dewan Rakyat session that disclosed Selangor under PKR-led as the most BR1M eligible recipients with a total of 1,017,403 out of 7,280,340.

Providing financial assistance by the government to a low-income citizen is not an alien concept and has been practised in many countries around the world. In fact, such government cash aid has been recognised by the World Bank and the IMF (International Monetary Fund) as one of a robust method of social safety nets implemented in most developed countries.

Developed countries such as the United States is providing meals and the United Kingdom government has allocated the Social Fund. These are some examples of successful government cash grant program for helping the less fortunate. Our neighbouring country too, the Thai government has also implemented a cash grant as a way to help the poor and stimulate the national economy.

Surprisingly, Dr Mahathir is well aware when BR1M was first proposed and included in the 2012 budget that was based on the government’s committed understanding of the impact of the rising cost of living, especially the urban poor. But as he is too absorbed to oust PM Najib’s leadership, his odious persists that he has to insult the poor in such trying time.

We are not taken by surprised when Dr Mahathir is fiercely criticised by all levels of Malaysians in which they knew the BR1M statement is merely based on his deep rooted hatred for BN’s attentive government for the people. As we all know that Dr Mahathir will stop at nothing to criticise at anything and everything concerning DS Najib’s leadership, but this time it is truly disgracing for a statesman such as Dr Mahathir to stoop so low and liken himself as a mediocre politician.
