Wear Helmets When Riding To Mosques, Says RTD

Pic:NSTPPic:NSTPALOR STAR: The Road Safety Department (RTD) has urged motorcyclists to not ignore wearing helmets when going to the mosque for prayers, especially during Friday prayers.

Its director-general Abd Ghafar Yusof said observations have found that only a few motorcyclists wore helmets when going the mosque.

“When they go to their work place they wear their safety helmets, and when they go to the mosque they ignore it.

The risk they pose when they are on the road without a safety helmet is very high.

“We want them to take this matter seriously and monitoring by the authorities is needed to raise awareness,” he told reporters after officiating the state-level ‘Long Short Walk’ safe walking campaign here, today.

He said in Kedah for example, almost 80 per cent of accidents that occurred involved motorcycles, and among the causes were beating the red light.

According to him, statistics showed there were 3,223 fatalities involving motorcyclists and pillion riders from January till September 2014 and 3,098 such fatalities during the same period last year.
