Islamist party's vice-president, Iskandar Abdul Samad, says that if Amanah respected its PH allies it would not 'steal' seats belonging to PKR.
KUALA LUMPUR: Amanah’s declaration that it wants to contest in 40 parliamentary seats in the next general election, including those held by PAS and PKR, runs counter to the meaning behind the party’s name.
The word
In stating so, PAS vice-president Iskandar Abdul Samad also said that if Amanah respected its allies in Pakatan Harapan (PH) it would not contest in seats belonging to PKR.
“This not only reveals their true colours, but also proves that we were right about them all along,” Iskandar told reporters here.
PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang had previously labelled those in Amanah – a party set up by progressive members of PAS who left the party after its candidates lost in last year’s party elections – as traitors.
Hadi also said the Islamist party would never work with Amanah.
“This is why we never refer to them as Amanah, but PAN. They are part of PH, yet they want to steal PKR’s seats. There is nothing left to say,” Iskandar said.
Amanah communications director Khalid Samad had yesterday revealed that the PAS splinter party was eyeing 40 parliamentary seats in the next general election (GE14).
Khalid said the seats they identified were ones which they feel they could win.
The Shah Alam MP however, said his party would discuss the matter with its PH partners and the new opposition Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia led by former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
On a separate matter, Iskandar today launched a campaign to register over 100,000 new PAS members before GE14.
The registration drive, he explained, was launched after the party discovered that there were many people who were interested in signing up with the party.
Iskandar revealed that PAS was targeting to add 15% more members in Kedah, Kelantan and Selangor, where there are currently 25,808, 18,255 and 15,659 PAS members, respectively.
He denied that the membership drive had anything to do with the threat posed by Amanah’s formation.
“If we felt that our position was threatened, we would not have set a specific target.”
According to PAS, the party currently has 878,838 members nationwide.
