Lee Hsien Loong wishes Mahathir and his team every success, and hoped to catch up with him in person soon.
SINGAPORE: Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has congratulated Dr Mahathir Mohamad on being sworn in as the 7th prime minister of Malaysia
“I wish Tun Mahathir and his team every success, and hope to catch up with him in person soon.
“Malaysia is a vital partner of Singapore, and our peoples share strong and deep bonds.
“I look forward to working with Tun Mahathir and the new government to enhance our cooperation. We can do much more together,” he said on his Facebook account.
Earlier, the republic’s Trade and Industry Minister Chan Chun Sing said Singapore would continue to work closely with Malaysia’s new government to advance the relationship between the two countries.
In response to questions about the impact of Malaysia’s historic election results on bilateral ties, Chan said that it was still “early days” to assess what the outcome would mean for major projects, such as the KL-Singapore High Speed Railway.
He said Singapore looked forward to the formation of a new Malaysian government.
The Singapore government was “closely following” developments in Malaysia, Chan was quoted as saying by The Business Times (BT).
“Malaysian politics is for Malaysians to decide.
“We have a long-standing and broad-ranging relationship with the Malaysians and we expect the government of the day to continue to advance this relationship to the mutual benefit of both countries,” Chan said on the sidelines of a factory visit to food company SMC Food 21’s premises in Jurong.
The massive victory by Pakatan Harapan, led by Mahathir, in the 14th general election (GE14) yesterday put an end to the six decades of Barisan Nasional (BN) administration in Malaysia.
Mahathir was sworn in as the seventh prime minister at 9.50pm tonight.
Meanwhile, in BANGKOK, exiled former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra extended his congratulations to Mahathir for his “spectacular comeback” in winning yesterday’s general election.
He said the “power of the people has spoken loud and clear” and it was clear the country’s electorate did not only remember Mahathir’s outstanding legacy but needed his leadership.
“From my experience having the honour of working closely with him, I am confident that he would lead the Alliance of Hope and Malaysia into the successful future.”
Thaksin made the remarks today in his email, in which he also shared an undated picture of himself with Mahathir.
According to Thaksin, who was deposed by the Thai military in 2006 and now lives in exile, Mahathir’s leadership would undoubtedly reinvigorate Asean as well as ideas and visions that he helped shape.
