PKR de facto leader says they should be grateful they had won in this general election.
PETALING JAYA: PKR’s de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim tonight criticised MPs who were lobbying for Cabinet positions amid negotiations between Pakatan Harapan parties on the matter.
“Look in the mirror first. Be grateful that you have won. If you become a minister, then work,” he said at a rally at Padang Timur here attended by 5,000 people.
He urged the people not to listen to the “whispers of the devil” which sought to weaken Pakatan Harapan, in reiterating his full support for Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Anwar, who was making his first public appearance in three years after his royal pardon and release from prison, also said he backed Mahathir because he had confidence that the 92-year-old and the other PH leaders were committed to change.
Anwar also said many had asked his stand now that he was free.
“I tell them the people have chosen and we must give space and support to Mahathir and Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, as deputy prime minister, to run the show.”
Anwar also revealed that Mahathir had asked if he would like to be part of the Cabinet, but he declined, saying he would just support the administration as a citizen for now.
He added that for now, he would take a break, spend time with his family and even meet Turkish President Recep Tayipp Erdogan.
He also praised Mahathir as someone who understood the feelings of the people for reiterating PH’s promise to the people to abolish the goods and services tax (GST)
Anwar also called on the public to monitor elected representatives and “whack” them if they suddenly bought new cars or apartments.
Anwar, who spoke for around 30 minutes, also thanked the people for backing PH, because if the Najib Razak-led BN had won, he may have had to return to the Sungai Buloh Prison after being treated at the Cheras Rehabilitation Hospital.
“For three years I took an unpaid vacation. I am thankful to all of you because I am a free man today,” he said to laughter from the crowd.
He also revealed how Wan Azizah was asked by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Muhammad V, if she was ready to be PM as she was president of PKR.
“But she said PH had agreed that Mahathir would be PM and the King said it was rare that a politician who received such an opportunity wanted to keep a promise and turn down such a high position.
Anwar said Wan Azizah did however make a request to the King — asking for him to be immediately released.
“The King said, I will do it now, as fast as possible.”
Prior to his release, Anwar was had served three years in prison for his second sodomy conviction and was set to initially be released on June 8.
The King has given him a full pardon.
