Following swearing-in of new PM, Sarawak government says it respects the decision of the people.
PETALING JAYA: The Sarawak Barisan Nasional government has acknowledged the victory of Pakatan Harapan at the polls and their right to form the new federal government.
In a statement released following the swearing-in of PH chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad as the country’s seventh prime minister, the Sarawak government congratulated the new ruling coalition for its victory in the 14th general election (GE14).
“The Sarawak BN government respects the decision of the rakyat.
“The state government, even though now an opposition government, will continue to work with the new federal government for the benefit of the rakyat in Sarawak in particular and Malaysia in general.”
The Sarawak government also stressed that its top priority remained the reclaiming of state rights.
“We will continue to work towards reclaiming the rights, which have been eroded over the years, back to Sarawak as enshrined in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) and the Federal Constitution.
“The state government will closely monitor all the promises as contained in the PH manifesto in the next five years, particularly those relating to Sarawak.”
According to the Sarawak PH manifesto released on March 10, the coalition promised to return the 20% oil and gas royalty as well as 50% tax revenue collected in Sarawak to the state.
PH also promised to restore decision rights over education and health to Sarawak; build infrastructure for all longhouses and villages, as well as supply basic amenities, such as treated water and electricity, to all areas in Sarawak; and provide 100,000 jobs for Sarawak’s unemployed youths.
