TM: 20,000km submarine cable to boost internet service

300w, http://ift.tt/2e8PO43 550w, http://ift.tt/2fdVez4 218w" width="648">KUALA LUMPUR: The South-East Asia-Middle East-Western Europe 5 (SEA-ME-WE 5) consortium today announced construction of the 20,000km submarine cable infrastructure has been completed.

Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) global wholesale executive vice-president Mohammad Rozaimy Abdul Rahman said the cable system, which has already started to carry traffic, was expected to meet the quadrupling of bandwidth demand in 18 countries from Southeast Asia to Western Europe.

“This project is expected to be able to fulfil TM’s future business needs and boost growth in international bandwidth, Internet Protocol (IP) Transit, IP Virtual Private Networks, interconnection and backhaul services,” he said in a statement today.

Meanwhile, SEA-ME-WE 5 Consortium management committee chairperson Linette Lee said the system would facilitate a new age of digital transformation and innovation, catalysing greater economic activities, trade and growth across three continents.
