The Bingkor assemblyman says elected representatives should prioritise the interest of the people over self-interest or their party’s interests.
KOTA KINABALU: Borneo rights advocate Jeffrey Kitingan has called on the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) to change its lawmakers if they don’t stand up for Sabah.
Alternatively, he said, the people should replace the BN Sabah government with a new ruling party or coalition.
Sabah lawmakers should fulfil their obligations and responsibilities by fighting to ensure Sabah’s rights and interests in Malaysia were respected and honoured, said Jeffrey in a statement posted in the Gabungan Rakyat SakSaMa whatsApp Group.
Jeffrey, the Bingkor assemblyman, was commenting on a statement by Sabah Council of Churches president, Rev Jerry Dusing, who had urged the Sabah government to stand fast on freedom of worship and the Malaysia Agreement 1963.
“This is both timely and appropriate,” said Jeffrey.
He said Sabahans were increasingly speaking up for their homeland’s rights to be restored and for the rejection of bigotry and extremism creeping in from Malaya (peninsula).
He cited the need for Sabah to seek the return of 40% of the revenue derived from Sabah. “This amounts to tens of billions of ringgit each year,” said Jeffrey. “The arrears since 1974 would be in the hundreds of billions of ringgit.”
This revenue should be used for the welfare of Sabahans, he said.
Jeffrey said he did not see any change taking place in Sabah unless the state government realised it was elected to represent the people.
He said BN Sabah leaders had not been elected to be subservient to outsiders.
“They were not elected to be proxies of political masters in Putrajaya,” said Jeffrey. “They were certainly not elected to give up the rights, interests and welfare of the people of Sabah.”
He said BN leaders should prioritise the interest of the people over self-interest or their party’s interests.
